November started off with mid-terms and ended with some drama, so the blog had to sit in a corner for a second. Unfortunately, my finals are the first and second weeks of December and then I go on Winter Break. Therefore, I won't be posting as much as I would like.

But I figure since new episodes of 90210 start in January, that's a good time to super re-launch this blog.

Anyway, since this is Thanksgiving week, I just wanted to come through and say thanks to everyone who visited this blog. I'm doing numbers with this thing and that wouldn't be if it wasn't for you all. Thank you!

Dammit, why I gotta wait until January 6th?! Yeah, yeah...I know, I am the number one hater of this show but to be honest, it has its moments where it actually tugs at you a little bit in a good way. The best scene so far in the series did that for me.

Dixon and Harry's exchange about being different tore me up for a second, I can't lie. We all wondered how the obvious difference between Dixon and his family would be discussed on the show. Tonight, they hit it on the head. That phrase "It does matter" brought the whole thing home.

As for Christina, I'm juiced. No, not because I wish some ill will toward Silver but because I think the character of Christina is going to bring him back "to his roots". The first exchange between the two, I think, will set the tone of their relationship. She continually made references to Dixon being Black, calling him "brotha" and the school's Jackie Robinson. When Harry said that it was time to deal with Dixon's culture head-on, Christina might be that person.

I'm not saying that he's going to try out his Blackness by dating a Black girl. I'm saying that for the moment that she is on, she will be Dixon's source for daily Blackness. As weird, corny and slightly crazy that may sound, who else is he going to learn that from?

My Thoughts on 'New New' on '90210'

As you heard last week, one of my favorite actresses, Lauren London, will be appearing on '90210' in the coming weeks. The synopsis from her debut episode has been released and guess what, she's the one that's going to try to break up Silver and Dixon. Figures.

I already know how this is going to go down. London's character, Christina, is going to bring up that quintessential Black girl line: "Why are you messing with these White girls?" You know and I know it. I wish that her character would be more complex but this is 90210, so who am I kidding?

I'm more interested in seeing the confrontation between Silver and Christina. I can't front, if Silver goes at Christina sideways, I might have to give her the side-eye. I've seen situation like down go down in the streets and it isn't pretty. Silver's character has been described as a bitch, so we'll see if she channels that.

So our fave YBF chick Lauren is headed back to the classroom and will likely be Tristan Wild’s (who plays “Dixon“) love interest. Hmmm….looks like I have a reason to actually watch that show past the first 2 episodes. I can only take so much of Tristan’s character falling in love with every Becky and Jane on the show. [Source]

Is '90210' Just A Pit-Stop?

I finally checked out The Secret Life of Bees and it was INCREDIBLE. LOVED IT! I cried and the whole nine. When Tristan hit the screen, I couldn't sit in my chair right. Tristan + Southern accent + tight-ass jeans = Heaven on Earth. One of the first scenes between Zach and Lily, when she discovers him singing ...I most definitely had a moment. If Tristan walked up to me like that,with that wifebeater and dog tag...hell, that kiss was on POINT. Guess what, I didn't gag either. I think I fell in love. Seriously.

Anyway, walking home from the theater, I started wondering how this movie will change Tristan's career. His definitely showed out in each and every way. So after watching it, it made me loathe 90210 even more than I already do.

As you know, I'm not that big of a fan of 90210 and believe me, I've tried to get down with it for what it is. But after his performance in Bees, it made me wish he wasn't on something like 90210. Like given the chance, he could do WAY better.

Trust when I tell you, I'm happy that Tristan gets to show his diversity with 90210. I don't want Michael Lee to be the archetype of his acting career. So yeah, going towards the other end of the spectrum is respected and Tristan has most definitely held his own but damn, he was IMMACULATE in Bees. "That's the Tristan I want to see," you know?

So I throw this over to you ... if you've seen The Secret Life of Bees, how do you rate Tristan's performance? Should 90210 just be a pit-stop on Tristan's acting journey or should he stick with it? If you could see Tristan in any role, what/who would it be?

But Tristan Wilds shrugs it off as no big deal. Acting is something he's good at, and playing characters who seem polar opposites is just part of the deal. Besides, he says, Michael and Dixon aren't as dissimilar as they at first appear.

His name is Cassius Willis and his acting credits span over some of your favorites shows including C SI, Young and The Restless, Las Vegas and House. Coincidentally, he's played a law figure in the majority of his acting credit be it a detective (...my mind just went in the gutter with that one...), security guard or a lawyer, as seen in 90210 . '90210' Episode Seven Review: That One!

Nothing really exciting happened on the Dixon side of 90210 last night. We found out that he's the ultimate boyfriend: taking time to understand his girl. That was sweet.

The drama factor for everybody else was insane! Naomi, the drugs, Adriana, the (possible) OD, the undercover narc on some Never Been Kissed shit. Naomi's mom kissing Harry. But all of that didn't matter to me. The only thing: Naomi's lawyer.

That man was FINE. Black man personified. I forgot who I was watching the show for. I definitely had a moment. The other Black guy on the show was the lawyer. Progress, people.

What do I want next week: A break. They will most likely air a re-run next week and thank God. I need a vacation.

The cast of The Secret Life of Bees appeared on Oprah Thursday. Here's what Dakota Fanning had to say about kissing Tristan in the movie:

"I really have to thank Tristan because he really made me feel comfortable," she says. "I think we really knew each other well, and we made each other feel very at ease with that. There was no awkwardness going on, and [the director] didn't make us do it a million times."

Off-screen, Dakota says she and Tristan are friends, but when the director said action, they became their characters. With so many technical aspects to consider, there also wasn't time to get lost in the moment. "When you're setting up, [they say] 'When you go in, hold your head here, and then at this point, turn your head here,'" she says. "You're like, 'Okay. We do have to kiss at some point. It can't be all about the face angles.' But, you know, it was good. He's such a nice, nice, nice person."[Source]

'90210' and Transracial Adoptions

As you know, one of the central - and somewhat controversial- themes in 90210 is the transracial adoption of Dixon by the Wilsons. All of that came to focus after disparaging comments were made about Dixon and his mother at an industry party.

The website 'Adoption Under One Roof' also touched on the topic as well.

While most transracial adoptive families probably do not experience this level of drama (it is 90210 after all), they probably do have to deal with people asking incredulously, “That’s your child??” on occasion. It must be frustrating because, as an adoptive mother, I know that the love that I feel for my son has nothing to do with how he looks. Also, his adoption happened so long ago. I really do not want to talk about it every day with every person I meet. [Source]

For the first 42 minutes, I was bored out of my mind until...Michael Lee rose from the grave.

If Dixon's went into Michael Lee's former behavior, I didn't want it to be over something trivial. You know "I just wanted to pick a fight with someone for the hell of it" But when someone' went all bigot on him, all I could say was "Damn right, Dixon!"

He defended his girl, his mom and his self in one smooth ass punch. No it wasn't a Kenard beatdown, but dammit, it was worth it.

The "Who's your babydaddy" line was out-of-line. The "thug" and "Compton kid" declarations were out-of-line ten-fold.

However, I think it would of said more of Dixon NOT to fight: to show that he is the bigger man. But could you blame him? No.

About the kissing: We can finally see his lips but I still can't watch it. My reaction during their first scenes in Episode 6: Ewww!! *gag*. I can't stand watching him kiss some girl. It makes me sick. Sick.

What do I want next week: Apparently, Silver has Kelly's place to herself. You know what that means...*gag*

Speaking at the The Secret Life of Bees premiere in my home area of Washington D.C., Tristan shares his thoughts on Barack Obama:

On the other hand, Tristan Wilds, star of “The Wire” and the new “90210” spinoff (he plays the Brandon Walsh-esque character), had plenty to say about politics. It was a cool experience, he said, to be making a movie set during the Civil Rights Movement down in North Carolina last winter, the same time that Barack Obama was tearing up the Democratic primary.
“It was pretty complex in a way, but it was pretty dope, too,” said the newcomer. “For us to be doing that and for him to be gaining so much steam, we were filming a movie about changing the world—and he was changing the world at the same time.”

Wilds was on a roll - and hey, why not - he also chimed in on the financial bailout.

“It’s a hectic time,” he said. “Seriously, I just hope the best candidate does what they’re supposed to do. … I know it’s going to be a slow process, but I just hope we can get back on our feet at least. It doesn’t have to be—we don’t have to be—the highest nation again, we just have to be back on our feet.” [Source]

'90210' Episode Five Review: This Shit is Getting Out of Hand

I know I said Wednesday night but I couldn't find the words until this morning....

Okay...Annie wants to do Ty. Ty turns around and does Adriana or she plays some silly stunt. Dixon was about to do Silver but didn't have a rubber. Dixon didn't have a strap because he gave it to Annie who wanted to do Ty. What the hell?!

After watching this monstrosity, I don't know what to think or do. First of all, the way that Dixon wants to smash Silver comes off a little Birth of a Nation to me*. Secondly, this episode came off contrived as hell. Annie would go to her brother for protection? My brother would kick my ass. Third, should I expect Silver or Annie to be pregnant by the end of the show? Four, that almost-sex scene with Dixon and Silver made me gag something serious. Worse than that scene from The Wire.

What do I want next week? Some Motrin.

* Okay, evoking Birth of a Nation for this is very suspect, I know. I'll elaborate on it in one of today's posts.

Due to its early success, 90210 has been granted more episodes by The CW.

It's back nine for "90210."

In the first full-season order for a freshman series this season, the CW has picked up nine additional episodes of the teen drama, bringing the total order to 22.

The much buzzed about "90210," from CBS Par TV, was the first new fall show to premiere. After a blazing start with a two-hour debut Sept. 2 that was seen by 4.9 million viewers and posted the highest-rated series premiere in the CW's two-year history in women 18-34, adults 18-34 and adults 18-49, the "Beverly Hills, 90210" spinoff dropped precipitously in its second airing but recovered nicely last week to average 3.3 million viewers. ‘90210’ Episode Four Review: For A Brief Moment

Nothing really extraordinary happened on tonight’s episode except Dixon’s 35-second monologue about being a Black kid in White world. I thought it was kind of poignant, saying that when he sits at the dinner table and everyone laughs, for a second, he feels like he doesn’t fit in. My first thought after hearing that short monologue: damn, finally …

Still, the quick switch to Silver’s cute flirting with Dixon kind of set me off the wrong way. Yes, you don’t want to be too-depressing on a show like 90210, but Dixon’s race is super-obvious. If you don’t take the time to address it, it seems as like you don’t give a damn, which you have to.

Now to this Dixon-Silver situation. The Annie/Dixon kissing scenes ratio is about six to zero. Give him a scene, damn! I know it’s coming eventually but if they don’t have Dixon all up on some chick by the end the season, I’m through. My hormones are impatient.

But I will say this: he is cute as hell when he talks to Silver. Dixon’s coy demeanor around her actually puts a smile on my face especially since he did not have a scene like that on The Wire. If he ever looked at me like that, I would fall the hell out. People want to see something happen, so let’s hope it does.

What do I want next week? A damn kissing scene or something. Annie is already past third base, on her way to home.

Thanks to everyone who has sent me an email in the past week . Yes, I am okay. When I say I'm going on vacation, I mean it :-P.

We don't have internet at my parents' house (I know, right?) so I don't have any way to update the blog unless I do something illegal.

However, I will update the blog after tonight's episode of 90210.

Also, when I get back, I will be SUPER-updating this blog. Except 25 posts out the gate.

90210 Episode Review 3: I Think They’re Getting Somewhere

Last week, I complained about what 90210 wasn’t doing. I called it ‘superficial as hell’ to be honest. But after watching tonight’s episode, my opinion has changed. Slightly.<>

The Tristan I loved came through tonight, especially during his scenes with Silver. He was compassionate and you could feel it. I was genuinely surprised that Dixon’s story was interwoven with the stories of Silver. Even though we have yet to know all of the details of his life, we do get to see how much he’s grown with the help of the Wilsons. That was good to see.

<>I’m waiting for the Silver/Dixon romantic scenes to happen and honestly, I don’t know how I’m going to handle it. It’s almost like running into your younger brother kiss some girl; it makes you gag. I couldn't handle his little ditty of a sex scene on The Wire as it was. *Gags again*

I'm also happy that they left all of the super-flashy stuff out of this episode. That's what turned me off in the first place. One more jet flight, overpriced birthday party or 'I buy the friends expensive shit because I can' moments and I was going to lose my mind. We know some of these kids' parents have cake but you don't have to emphasize it every show. The goal of the show is to prove that teenagers from all backgrounds go through the same shit. Every time you mention how much money these kids may come from, it kills the common ground that we all have.

What do I look forward to next week: The Dixon and Silver relationship. I'll probably "Aww" and gag at the same time.

I Need A Vacation...

However, I am reviewing both episodes three and four of 90210 after they air. I can't believe this shit. Do you remember the school uniforms that Micheal Lee and his boys used to wear? You know, the maroon shirts with the khaki pants? Why was Dixon wearing THE SAME outfit on his first day at West Beverly Hills High?

I'm watching Season 4 of The Wire right now and I had to do a double take. I searched around online to see if anyone else saw the similarity and The Detroit News apparently noticed it too:

Via the Bay State Banner. Tristan reveals why he chose 90210 as his next big project.

“I wanted to show that I wasn’t just a street kid from Baltimore’s corners,” said Wilds, a native of Staten Island, N.Y., during a recent interview in Los Angeles. “I wanted to show that I have a broader range than that. It’s fun because in a sense I can put more of myself inside the character. I can be more fun, I can laugh more, I can smile more, I can joke around with my friends. I can be the ladies man.”

Plus, the 19-year-old added with a laugh, “I don’t have to shoot anybody in the head.”[Source]

While it's very well known on this blog that I'm still not sold on 90210, I was reminded by someone that at least he has a job. The writer's strike killed alot of work for alot of people. So yeah, I am happy that I get to see him on TV every week versus my other favorites actors from The Wire who pop up every three months. That still doesn't mean that I like the show.

Seriously, I'm trying. I can be hypercritical (bad, I know) but dammit, it's hard with something like this. Like I said, I'm going to give it three more episodes before I stop watching for entertainment and ONLY for this blog. Dammit!

I Just Can't Get Over You....

Damn you, Tristan. Why did you have to play Michael Lee so well?! After perusing through the many online reviews of 90210, the consensus from most was that it was a disappointment. The hype didn't match the product, the product won't produce any hype. The other often-mentioned point: What the hell is Tristan doing on this show? He's too good to be on something this bad.

Honestly, I started to feel that way halfway through the first part of the premiere. 90210 had moments that reeked of corny-ness. Mind you, I'm almost four years removed from high school and there was nothing about WBHH that made me go "I remember when that happened". I know the stories about elite kids are in style right now, but so is humility, compassion and reality. This show, so far, failed on all counts. If I did a story on my high school, you would be appalled at first but would leave inspired. Where the hell is that on TV?

Moving on though, the real reason why I think it's hard for critics -- and, through admission, myself -- to process seeing Tristan on 90210 is because he played Michael Lee perfectly. The reason why The Wire was so huge was because people could actually look out their windows and see these things. I grew up with a Namond Brice in my house (no, my family didn't push any weight). I went to school with many Michael Lees. Tristan was once on a show that portrayed life in its most ignorant and inspirational ways. 90210 emphasizes with ignorance and false idolatry. I want them to prove me wrong. But this show is made for teenagers, so I'm wishing on a star that doesn't exist.

Maybe I'm out of touch. I'm 21, this show isn't made for me. Maybe high school is really like that today. If that's the case, it's sad as hell.

The original “Beverly Hills, 90210,” which ran for 10 years, had kids dealing with a host of issues, including abortion, addiction, eating disorders, homosexuality — even mother/daughter fashion shows gone horribly wrong.

To prepare for the role, Wilds had to watch the full run of the original show, but found it too female-oriented for his taste.

‘90210’ Episode Review – September 2nd, 2008

And it only took 20 minutes for Dixon to channel his inner Michael. The two-hour premiere of 90210 came and went and the overall feeling: this is going to be one interesting party. **From this point on, if you missed the episode, read at your own risk. Don’t say I didn’t warn you**

For those who missed the episode -- it re-airs at 8 pm on Thursday night -- watching politics (if this was the night of the Democratic National Convention not the Republican National Convention, you all would be short right now … Obama ’08!), Dixon gets himself into some typical teenage trouble: fights, vindictive text-messages and practical jokes. But while I was mostly interested in Tristan’s performance, I couldn’t help but fall in love with two other characters on the show.

The first is Tabitha Wilson, the grandmother of Dixon and Annie, mother to Harry. She’s a non-recovering-recovering alcoholic with a smart mouth that keeps it a little too real for Dixon’s liking. She’s really the kid of the bunch, living in her own world and living her life, one drink at a time. She’s going to spill some juice this season that is going to shake everything up. I’m excited.

The second character is Ethan Ward, the player’s player with a heart. Yeah, he gets served in the front seat of a car, but there’s a root to why he thinks it’s alright to do that. Yeah, he claims to hate Naomi, but yet he can’t really separate from her. Naomi and Annie are going to have some beef, but with them having a half-sibling and not knowing it, I’ll be curious to see how this goes.

Well, back to the task at hand: Tristan aka Dixon. For a format like 90210, I think he did a great job. In a sad, twisted way, I was happy that he got in a fight with someone. Maybe it’s The Wire fan in me, who knows. He also had his “I’m not snitching on anybody Bunk vs. Michael Lee” moment in the second episode. Maybe Dixon and Michael have some similarities.

I’m also happy that the Silver/Dixon relationship didn’t pop off this early in the season – if it ever does. If you remember the promos, there was a quick image of Tristan dancing closely with Silver. As a viewer, I don’t need 50-11 relationships going on in the first two episodes, but rather find out the roots to some of the issues that are central to the story. For instance, the Naomi/Silver beef has some roots in the past (Naomi and Silver once being best friends) and you find out why.

The last thing that stuck out to me was the diversity of the students. I saw Black kids all over the place, which caught me the hell off guard. That’s interesting to say the least and I wonder whether that will play into Dixon’s storyline.

What I look forward to in the future: Harry’s illegimate child – that he had with Naomi’s mother right after high school – surfacing and what that revelation might do to the relationship between Dixon and Harry, an Annie and Dixon beef (think about it, if Ethan is trying to get with Annie while Dixon – and the whole school – is aware of his games, Dixon is going to play protector, right? Drama happens…) and someone getting pregnant (you know it’s going to happen).
